I Grew a Purple Cauliflower
I grew a purple cauliflower! I started this from seed at an SF Garden for the Environment workshop several months ago. I’m told that cauliflower is a bit of a prissy prima donna kind of plant to grow. So I’m super excited it has made it this far.
Cauliflower is a BIG plant, with expansive leaves that command space like the swish of a decadent opera gown. (Full disclosure: I was listening to Fresh Air on the way home from the community garden this evening, and the commentator at the end was talking about Verdi’s Il Trovatore and how the 1950s Italian filmmaker Visconti brought the operatic to film even though Hollywood was like, ugh, opera.)
Also, I’ve got to say, I love the Italian word for cauliflower: cavolfiore. Cauliflower, sounds so clunky, once you rolled cavolfiore off your tongue with Italian gusto. Try it. See?

Wow! I’m green – notice, I didn’t say purple! I’ve never had much luck with growing cauliflower but am now feeling a tad competitive and will need to try it again this fall. Go you!
Thanks! You can do it too! I babied the crap out of this cauliflower plant from the get go. I started several seeds — this was the one that did the best, so I just kept taking really good care of it. Fed it good organic fertilizer, worm tea and seaweed extract.
Nice work. I love veggies with a little twist. We just got a Romanesco broccoli from our CSA which I find funky too. Matti
