My Mama’s Garden
Garden Tour
I just got back from a quick trip to Montana to meet my newborn nephew and see family. While I was there my mom gave me a tour of her garden. Definitely not an urban garden!
Not a bad view, huh? They live near Flathead Lake in Western Montana. Despite a short growing season, thy have such long summer days. It’s not fully dark until well after 10pm. Not to mention full, full sun.
She’s growing 3 different varieties of tomatoes (including Black Prince which I’m also growing this year and started from seed), eggplant, prolific basil (especially the plant she keeps warm in a water jacket), squash, cantaloupe, pumpkin, purple beans, peppers and lots of lettuce (from a seed mix I gave her). Plus, she has fledgling peach tree. I’m sure they all appreciate the ridiculously gorgeous view of the mountains and the lake.
(Although I grew up in Sacramento, my brother and parents eventually all made their way to the Big Sky state. And yes, the sky really is bigger there.)
